Two days ago, on July 27, 2017, we, Brett, his twin brother Bryan and their mother, have visited the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.

After an around 2h car drive through a wonderful landscape which is oriented by forests, from Williamsport in direction of Wellsboro, we arrived at Harrison State Park. Following, we hiked the Turkey Path until the bottom of the canyon.

The advice given on this sign we followed until we came to a little waterfall. After we had taken some photos from the distance, the opportunity to get photos of us under the waterfall seemed to tempting to us.

When we reached the bottom of the canyon, we came to a little picturesque creek, the Pine Creek, which meanders through the canyon.

We stopped there for a rest, before we got on the way back. As we arrived back where we had started, we had a wonderful view over the canyon from the viewpoint. The mix of the dept of the canyon and the expanse of the hilly countryside can’t be captured by any camera.

It was just an undescribable feeling to stand up there.

Vorgestern, am 27.07.2017, haben wir, Brett, sein Zwillingsbruder Bryan und ihre Mutter einen Ausflug an den Pennsylvania Grand Canyon gemacht. Nach ca zwei Stunden Autofahrt durch eine wunderschöne, von Wäldern geprägte Landschaft von Williamsport in Richtung Wellsboro, sind wir im Harrison State Park angekommen. Anschließend sind wir dann den „Turkey Path“ bis auf den Grund des Pennsylvania Grand Canyon gewandert.

Den auf dem Schild gegebenen Ratschlag, auf dem Weg zu bleiben, haben wir solange befolgt, bis wir an einen kleinen Wasserfall gekommen sind. Nachdem wir ein paar Fotos aus der Distanz geschossen hatten, erschien uns die Aussicht auf Fotos von uns unter dem Wasserfall dann doch zu verlockend.

 

Nachdem wir den Grund des Canyon erreicht hatten, sind wir an einen malerischen kleinen Fluss, den Pine Creek, gekommen, welcher sich durch den Canyon schlängelt.

 

Hier haben wir dann Rast gemacht, bevor wir uns wieder auf den Rückweg gemacht haben. Wieder oben angekommen, hatten wir vom Aussichtspunkt aus einen wunderschönen Blick über den Canyon. Die Mischung aus der Tiefe des Canyon, und der Weite der Hügellandschaft, die hinter dem Canyon beginnt, kann keine noch so gute Kamera einfangen.

Es war einfach ein unbeschreibliches Gefühl, dort oben zu stehen.

On July 25, 2017, I went by bus from State College (around 1h by car from Williamsport) to Philadelphia. During the 4h bus ride I passed many scenically beautiful places, for example at the Susquehanna River shortly before Harrisburg.

 

The weather was the whole day more cloudy, as you can see on the pictures. On a stop in Mifflintown, I have seen that the weather could have been kind of a – in the true sense of the word- „calm before the storm“: In Birmingham, Alabama for example, a street just had been washed away by the rain. There were also already some extreme weather warnings for Philadelphia. Luckily, it didn’t come that bad today (July 26) and it was just cloudy again, but with the sun sometimes coming out.

Philadelphia is maybe one of the most historic cities of the US, what also the many bynames of Philadelphia are showing, e.g. Philly, The City of Brotherly Love, The City That Loves you Back, Cradle of Liberty, The Quaker City, The Birthplace of America…

Here in Philadelphia, the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain was discussed and finally announced on July 4, 1776, like also the US Constitution on July 17, 1787. Philadelphia also was, from 1790 to 1800, the 2nd capital of the United States after New York. So there’s pretty much history on a few square miles.

When I got out of the bus in Philadelphia at around 2:45 pm, I was at first a bit overwhelmed by the size of the city and had to orient myself again. The bus station is situation just next to the 30th Street Station, the train station and the most important traffic junction of Philadelphia.

From this station, there a departing trains to New York, Washington DC, Boston and Baltimore, the subway station is nearby, too. After I got there – after some tries without success with my credit card- I finally paid my ticket cash and I also had found out that it’s better not to slide the ticket too fast through the card slot (it doesn’t work if you do so) I get into the subway – right line – but the wrong direction! So I get off again at the next station and take the next subway to the right direction. But somehow this subway seemed to go to the wrong direction again – I get off a second time and take the subway to the opposite direction, but this time not without asking someone if this subway now really goes to the right direction. This time everything works. After I have checked in in the Apple Hostle, I set off to a little walking tour through Philadelphia.

Heute, am 25.07.2017, bin ich mit dem Bus von State College (ca. eine Autostunde von Williamsport) nach Philadelphia gefahren. Während der vier Stunden Fahrt bin ich an vielen landschaftlich schönen Stellen vorbeigekommen, wie zum Beispiel hier am

Susquehanna River kurz vor Harrisburg. Das Wetter war den ganzen Tag über eher bewölkt, wie man auch auf den Fotos sehen kann. Bei einem Stopp in Mifflintown habe ich gesehen, dass das heutige Wetter wohl -im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes- die „Ruhe vor dem Sturm“ war: In Birmingham, Alabama zum Beispiel wurde eine ganze Straße einfach vom Regen weggewaschen. Es gab auch schon ein paar Unwetterwarnungen für Philadelphia. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass es hier nicht ganz so schlimm kommt.

Philadelphia ist wohl eine der geschichtsträchtigsten Städte der USA, was sich schon an den zahlreichen Spitznamen zeigt, die die Stadt trägt, z.B. Philly, City of Brotherly Love, The City that Loves you Back, Cradle of Liberty, The Quaker City, The Birthplace of America…

Hier in Philadelphia wurde die Unabhängigkeitserklärung der USA von Großbritannien beraten und schließlich am 4. Juli 1776 verkündet, wie auch die Verfassung am 17. Juli 1787. Zudem war Philadelphia nach New York von 1790-1800 die zweite Hauptstadt der USA. Viel Historie auf engem Raum also.

Als ich heute um ca. 14:45 in Philadelphia aus dem Bus gestiegen bin, war ich von der Größe der Stadt erst mal ein bisschen erschlagen und musste mich zunächst mal wieder orientieren. Die Busstation liegt direkt neben der 30th Street Station, dem Bahnhof und wichtigsten Verkehrsknotenpunkt von Philadelphia.

Von hier aus fahren Züge u.a. nach New York, Washington DC, Boston und Baltimore, auch die U-Bahn-Station ist in der Nähe. Nachdem ich dort – nach ein paar erfolglosen Versuchen mit meiner Kreditkarte- schließlich meine Fahrkarte in bar bezahlt und auch herausgefunden habe, dass man das Ticket nicht zu schnell durch den Kartenslot ziehen darf, steige ich in die U-Bahn – richtige Linie, aber die falsche Richtung! Also steige ich an der nächsten Station wieder aus, nehme die nächste U-Bahn in die Gegenrichtung. Wieder fällt mir auf, dass diese U-Bahn irgendwie genau in die falsche Richtung fährt, wieder steige ich aus und nehme die Bahn in die Gegenrichtung – diesmal aber nicht ohne sicherheitshalber nachzufragen, ob diese U-Bahn denn jetzt auch wirklich in die richtige Richtung fährt. Diesmal klappt alles. Nachdem ich dann im Apple Hostle eingecheckt habe, mache ich mich auf den Weg zu einem kleinen Stadtrundgang.

Williamsport is located in the US State of Pennsylvania in the Lycoming County, around a 3 hour car drive away from Philadelphia. The city has about 30,000 inhabitants and lies at the bank of the East Branch of the Susquehanna River.

The surrounding area is rural-oriented, there are lots of forests and it looks a bit like the Black Forest in Germany.

Yesterday I made a little bike tour where I took these pictures. With a city map of Williamsport I left the house to get to know the city of Williamsport better. 

During my bike tour, I came by accident to this wonderful place in the forest. Sometimes it was a bit confusing until I had found the way again, because Williamsport is like the most american cities compiled in a kind of a „square system“. That means you can have found the right street, but still be travelling in the wrong direction, because the roads are very straight. I Yesterday this happened to me for sure two or three times. I then had to get off my bike and to look on the city map again.

 

 

It’s also always necessary to watch out not to get on a too busy street, because the car drivers here sometimes don’t show that much consideration to bicycle riders.

Another, less dangerous speciality here is baseball. Williamsport is the founding place of the Little League Baseball and Softball. This non-profit organization organizes baseball leagues and softball leagues for children and adolescents. Most of them are playing in the USA, but there a worldwide Little League Baseball and Softball leagues, for example also in Germany, more exactly in Berlin.

In the mean time, the Little League organization has its headquarter in South Williamsport which lies on the opposite side of the Susquehanna River.

Today I’ve visited the Little League Museum together with Brett and Bryan. In this museum, the history of Little League baseball was shown very impressively.

Many historical balls and bats were exhibited, also a baseball signed by the  former US president Barack Obama.

But the most interesting thing was the very beautiful stadium with practicing places around outside the museum where every year the Little League World Series final is taking place and the rest of the year the Little League players are training for this big event.

 

So that’s it for the moment 🙂 when I have seen more I’ll write for sure another article about the region…

 

Williamsport liegt im US-Bundesstaat Pennsylvania im Lycoming County, etwa 3 Autostunden nördlich von Philadelphia. Die Stadt hat etwa  30 000 Einwohner und liegt am East Branch des Susquehanna River.

Die Umgebung ist ländlich geprägt, es gibt viel Wald, und es sieht ein bisschen aus wie im Schwarzwald.

Gestern habe ich eine kleine Radtour gemacht, bei der ich diese Bilder aufgenommen habe. Mit einem Stadtplan von Williamsport in der Tasche habe ich mich auf den Weg gemacht, Williamsport besser kennenzulernen.

 

 

 

 

 

Dabei bin ich zufällig an diese wunderschöne Stelle im Wald gekommen. Es war manchmal etwas verwirrend, bis ich den Weg wieder gefunden hatte, weil Williamsport wie die meisten amerikanischen Städte in einer Art „Quadratsystem“ angelegt ist. Das heißt, es kann passieren, dass man auf dem Stadtplan zwar die richtige Straße findet um zu einem bestimmten Punkt zu gelangen, aber man dann schlicht in die falsche Richtung fährt. Das ist mir gestern bestimmt zwei oder drei Mal passiert. Ich musste dann immer wieder mal vom Fahrrad absteigen und mir den Stadtplan nochmal genauer anschauen.

Man muss auch immer aufpassen, dass man nicht auf eine zu stark befahrene Straße gerät, da die Autofahrer hier nicht immer so viel Rücksicht auf Radfahrer nehmen.

Eine andere, weniger gefährliche Besonderheit hier ist Baseball. Williamsport ist der Gründungsort der Little League Baseball and Softball. Diese Non-Profit-Organisation veranstaltet Baseball- und Softballligen für Kinder und Jugendliche. Die meisten davon spielen in den USA, es gibt aber weltweit Little League- Baseball-und Softballligen, zum Beispiel auch in Deutschland, genauer in Berlin.

Mittlerweile sitzt die Little League- Organisation in South Williamsport, das auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite des Susquehanna River liegt.

Heute habe ich zusammen mit Brett und Bryan das Little League Museum in South Williamsport besucht. Dort konnte man sehr eindrucksvoll die Geschichte der Little League besichtigen.

Es gab viele geschichtsträchtige Bälle und Schläger zu sehen, und auch einen vom ehemaligen US-Präsidenten Barack Obama signierten Baseball.

Das interessanteste aber war die sehr schön angelegte Außenanlage, wo jährlich das Little League World Series Finale stattfindet, und die restliche Zeit des Jahres dafür trainiert wird.

So, das war es für den Moment erst mal 🙂 Wenn ich mehr gesehen habe, werde ich ziemlich wahrscheinlich noch einen Beitrag zur Region schreiben…

Die USA sind ein gespaltenes Land, ein Land der Widersprüche, der Gegensätze. Dinge, die sich auf den ersten Blick scheinbar ausschließen, befinden sich hier in direkter Nachbarschaft.

Wie beispielsweise hier in Williamsport, einer 30 000- Einwohner- Stadt in Pennsylvania: Manchmal trennt nur eine Straße die „guten“ Gegenden von denen mit Drogenproblemen. Um es auf den Punkt zu bringen: „Good side – bad side“ wie Brett’s Mutter es mir erklärt hat.                                      Ein anderes Beispiel:  Die – unter anderem politische- Spaltung des Landes zeigt sich auch hierin, dass auch miteinander befreundete Menschen mitunter völlig gegensätzliche politische Ansichten vertreten: So stimmt beispielsweise Bretts Familie nicht komplett mit Trump überein, ein Bekannter der Familie dagegen ist ein erklärter Trump- Fan.

Wie kommt es dazu?

Für einen möglichen Erklärungsversuch möchte ich ein weiteres Mal Bretts Mutter zitieren: „Das Problem mit Obamacare ist, dass es sehr viel kostet. Die sehr Reichen und die sehr Armen haben eine sehr gute Krankenversicherung, die Reichen, weil sie viel Geld haben, und die Armen, weil sie ihre Krankenversicherung vom Staat bezahlt bekommen. Aber wir in der arbeitenden Mittelschicht scheinen für alle zahlen zu  müssen. Unter anderem deswegen hat sich bei vielen eine gewisse Frustration angestaut. Und so sind dann viele dazu gekommen, für Trump zu stimmen.“

Diese Frustration kommt vor allem daher, dass durch das Verhalten vieler Politiker in Washington DC und auch einiger Präsidenten, bei vielen der Eindruck entstanden ist, dass es ihnen nur um Macht und Machterhalt geht, anstatt um die Interessen der Menschen. Vor allem Hillary Clinton kommt in diesem Zusammenhang sehr schlecht weg. Was ihr die Menschen am meisten übel nehmen, ist die E-Mail-Affäre. Aber auch die restlichen Präsidentschaftsbewerber von 2016 sind nicht gerade hoch angesehen: Bernie Sanders  (Demokraten) etwa wird von vielen als Sozialist gesehen, und Ted Cruz (Republikaner) steht für Brett’s Familie auf einer Stufe mit Donald Trump.                                     Man könnte es etwa so ausdrücken: Gutes Personal ist schwer zu kriegen, und schlechtes Personal ist sehr schwer loszuwerden.

The USA is a very split country, a country of contradictions, of contrasts. Things which are seemingly mutually exclusive, are here situated just next to each other.

For example, here in Williamsport, a  city of 30,000 inhabitants in Pennsylvania, sometimes, the „good“ areas are only separated by one street from the „bad“ areas.        Another example is that  people who are friends, from time to time, support totally opposite political positions. So, for example, Brett’s family doesn’t completely agree with Trump, a acquaintance of the family in comparison is a declared Trump fan.

How is that possible?

For a possible interpretative attempt, I want to quote Brett’s mother again: „The problem with Obamacare is: It doesn’t really work  and  it’s costly.  The very rich and the very poor have very good health insurance. The rich because they have a lot of money, and the poor because the government pays their health insurance. But we in the working middle class seem to be paying for everyone. This is just one of the reasons people are frustrated.“

This frustration comes primarily from the impression that many people have, that the politicians in Washington DC just care about their power and about keeping it, and not about the interests of people. Above all, Hillary Clinton has a very bad image. What the people mostly take offense to, is that career politicians need not  follow any rules, e.g. Hillary Clinton’s E-Mail affair. The other 2016 presidential candidates are also not highly estimated: Bernie Sanders (Democrats) is seen by many as a Socialist, and Ted Cruz (Republicans) is seen by Brett’s family on the same level as Trump.

You could it say like this: It’s difficult to get good leadership, and it’s pretty difficult to get rid of bad leadership.
